Our school C.E.I.P Navas de Tolosa of Jaén (Spain).
Our school was founded in 1978. Currently we have 6 classes of preschool and 12 of primary school. To those we must also add the three groups of audio and language, support in integration and special needs classes.
There are 455 students in the school which are distributed amongst the different classes as follows:
Preschool: 150
Primary: 300
Special Education: 5
The Teachers
The school has a total of 28 teachers, 2 men and 26 women. 67% of the teachers who are currently actively teaching are permanent staff.
We run 14 programs and plans.
The Families
Our school is located in a residential area composed mostly of blocks of flats with a predominantly middle class population and a low presence of immigrant families.
The growing percentage of parents who needed help in finding the balance between work and home made it necessary in 2002/2003 to put into motion the plan of opening a school canteen, along with morning classes and after school activities. During this semester the number of children using these services are as follows;
Morning classes: 120 students
School canteen: 95 students
After School Activities: 116 students distributed in the following classes; English, Judo, Cooking, Dance, Aloha Mental Arithmetic Program and the Emotional Intelligence workshop.
A large amount of the students live less than 500 metres from the school, therefore, no school transport is needed.
It seems that for the majority of the students of this school come from families without much monetary hardships. One indicator of this is that more than 80% have reported having a computer at home.
As for the students from immigrant families and other ethnicities, they are rare in our school and find themselves integrated with ease and with little to no difficulties in regards to the language.
Other Staff
The school, being a bilingual centre, also shares an English conversation assistant with another school in the city. The assistant is there to support the work done with the bilingual materials.
Student profile
The physical and psychological characteristics of the children of C.E.I.P “Navas de Tolosa” are similar to those found in any other school in the city. They don't have any real issues with integration and adaptation.
Our Area - Jaén
Jaén is a city in south-central Spain. The name is derived from the Arabic word khayyān ('crossroads of caravans'). It is located in the autonomous community of Andalusia. As the name suggests, Jaén was a famous cross roads for many centuries and boasts of Roman, Arab and Jewish ruins and heritage. But the most famous (and exciting) of our stories, is of the Lizard of Jaén, who as legend tells, after terrorising the locals, was tricked into eating dynamite and exploded.
